Manufactured Homes Continue to Gain Popularity as Two New California Bills Ease ADU Placement

Manufactured homes, including ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units), have seen a significant increase in popularity in recent years, not only for their affordability and flexibility but because California and local jurisdictions are easing ordinances related to ADUs.

In California, two new bills (SB-897 and AB-2221) took effect on January 1, 2023, that will help expand local permitting of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). These two bills make revisions to state law and should further help homeowners in their quest to place an ADU on their property.

Just a few of the statewide changes to the ADU permitting process address height limits, setbacks, parking requirements, that ADUs can be constructed in detached garages, and more. Just like previous bills signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, SB-897 and AB-2221 are designed to streamline permitting, placing, and building ADUs on properties throughout California.
